Can you identify this flower? Notice the leaves for clue.
Common name: Guess!
Botanical name: Arachis hypogaea, belongs to the legume or “bean” family (Fabaceae).
Details: It is a warm climate crop. The plants resemble clovers. The leaves are opposite and pinnate with four leaflets. The plant produces two kinds of flowers: male and female. The male flowers (see the pictures) are bright yellow with reddish veining and attractive compared to the female ones. Fertilized female flowers turn their face down, corkscrew themselves into the ground to form fruit.
And the fruits? Most of us love them to eat raw or roasted. Oil extracted from the fruits are used in cooking and medication. Its flour is rich in protien and is a flavour enhancer. Boiled ones are popular as snacks in India, China, West Africa and the US.
Any guesses??
